Road safety in England

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

Navigating roads and experiencing traffic in England as an expat can be a learning experience. We invite you to share your insights in order to help other expats and soon-to-be expats stay safe on the road in England, whether driving, cycling or just crossing the street.

Are traffic rules strictly respected or enforced in England?

Are there any unspoken rules, unexpected habits or regulations that you had to adapt to?

Are the roads safe and well-maintained?

Are there specific times of day, weather conditions, or seasons that make driving more dangerous?

If you have children, do you feel comfortable letting them travel alone on local roads, whether on foot, by bike, or motorbike?

What are your tips or advice to stay safe on the roads in England?

Share your insights and experience.

Thank you for your contribution.

Hi all

When arriving in the UK from EU my first driving experience was driving with a steering wheel at the right. It is therefore important to have a good evaluation of the distance between your car and the sidewalk to avoid picking up mirrors. The streets in the city are very narrow and people are used to park their cars in the street removing one side of the traffic. Here in Birmingham people drive faster and you have to support klaxons as people are not patient. The other challenge is to negotiate some roundabouts.

In the other hand, driving in the motorway is easier for the bands are wide.

Best regards
