Bringing a parent to Copenhagen

Talaia

Hi,

I'm wondering if I could bring my Mom to Copenhagen - we're from EU - and pay for her social insurance? Or would she be insured just because she'd live in Denmark? This is a long-ahead plan, I would probably want to bring her in about 10-15 years - she'd be at least 70 at the time.

Are there any social insurance options for such a person, could I get her any required nurse/doctor visits if needed, or would I in this case need to just buy a private medical insurance for her?

Also, how does the elderly care look in Denmark? Do you get any nice possibilities like elderly care houses in which you have your own little apartment or is it more like you get a bed in 3-4 person room (that's what you get in my country if you don't pay A LOT)?

Ah - my Mom doesn't work here in our country and she never did. She is starting now, but she will not be eligible for a pension here - I don't know if that makes any difference.

It'll not possible for you mother to receive a Danish social pension.

As a EU-citizen, she'll be entitled to health insurance (if she meets the requirements for her stay in this country).

We have no retirement homes. If elderly people need care, there are nursing homes. Actually, such homes are independent small apartments. You pay the normal expensive market rent, dependent on your income/fortune, you'll be entitled to a housing subsidy. You shall pay a housing deposit, and and you shall pay for all extras, food, wash, window cleaning etc. It's not up to you to choose among the extras, some of them you cannot avoid. Regarding your mother, you have accepted to pay for her under her stay in Denmark. It will be very, very costly to say it mildly.

You can also ask Statsforvaltningen.dk for advice as they administrate the issues of EU-citizens.

I may be wrong, but I don't think your plan will be feasible.

Thank you Nellie :)
I do not expect any kind of pension for my Mom, I mostly want her to have health insurance :) I know that I will need to secure an income to support her so she could stay in Denmark, good to know that it will be expensive - I will put more effort into getting to a place in life that will allow me to afford it :) Thank you very much for your help in all my questions recently! :)

Would she not get a pension from her home country?

Talaia

No, she didn't work because she was raising me and my sister and my father was earning the money - the plan was for them to live off his pension but he left her. And now she has no experience or anything - she now started working but to get a pension she'd have to work for 25 years and she's 60 already. She inherited some money that will be enough for a couple more years, but after that me and my sister will need to provide for her - we knew about it for a long time so we're prepared to do it :)
