Hi All,
I'm new to the forum.聽 My husband and I are currently living in the Virgin Islands and are interested in relocating to Cayey next year.聽 We like its higher elevation, country setting and relative closeness to San Juan.聽 We plan to make a pre-move visit in a couple of months.聽 In the meantime I would like to ask current Cayey residents a few questions:
1) How rainy and buggy is it relative to the SJ metro area?聽 (here on St. Croix the mosquitos come out in full force after it rains).
2) How is the humidity there in the mountains?聽 Does it feel like a wet blanket over everything?聽 Are you constantly battling mold in your house?
3) We'd love to rent a house in a country setting but hopefully still in town.聽 How safe is it in such areas and can you recommend specific neighborhoos?
4) My husband telecommutes and he requires a fast internet connection.聽 Is this easily available anywhere in Cayey?
5) With the university in town, are there cultural activities available to the general public or do you have to drive to SJ if you want to do anything cultural?聽 We're both Spanish speakers, so activities/entertainment in either language is OK.
6) I'm interested in hiking, nature walks, etc.聽 Is it relatively safe to do these activities alone here?

I live in san juan but love Cayey!聽 The Sand and the Sea is a great brunch place and the pine trees in the mountains remind me of the Catskill Mountains In NY.聽聽Most houses in the mountains of Cayey have fireplaces...and you need them!!! Hope you enjoy!
Btw, I had service on my smart phone Sprint ..with no problem.

I just discovered that possibly nobody on this forum lives in Cayey.聽 I'm still interested in getting additional information from people who are familiar with Cayey, so please do share with me your experience about this town and the surrounding area.聽 My specific questions appear at the beginning of this thread.聽 Thanks!

i share your concern about humidity, bugs, over population and not mentioned, skin exposure to tropical sunlight. I am considering moving to cayey from desert hot springs, ca., a culturally desolate city next to palm spring, ca. Intense winds on occasion, 120f on the hottest days, and not that much to do. I do not intend to have a car, and would utilize busses and taxis (how much do they cost?). I enjoy spanish antiquities and presume that San Juan might be of great interest to me. Is the road safe for bus travel?? Perhaps not. Medical insurance: I was thinking of colombia or ecuador, but i understand that these countries are now experiencing violence (colombia and voting). I am concerned about the poverty in PR. I remember the joke of a president trump throwing paper towels to people and not providing real assistance.聽 SO, is Cayey a good place to live??聽 i presume that i shall rent in PR because of the uncertain economy and the threat of hurricanes. please respond

Have you ever been to Puerto Rico? If you want a drier climate similar to Palm Springs I would suggest looking into the south side of the Island, unless more tropical is what you desire.

There isn鈥檛 much of any public transportation system. I would suggest buying a car when you get here on classificados, or shipping what you have in CA.

As far as violence, you will have that wherever you live. I鈥檓 almost all cases it will be whether you are causing issues or being disrespectful.

Puerto Rico is an amazing place, I love it here along with the people and culture. I would suggest coming to the island, renting a car and driving. You鈥檒l see places you like and don鈥檛. Then you鈥檒l know what area suits you best.
