Your favorite things about the Puerto Plata area?

wondering9

I'm a newbie, still temporarily based in Santo Domingo but wanting to explore, and I had a trip planned to Puerto Plata/Sosua/Cabarete and then I got sick. Nothing serious, but I don't think I should get on a public bus coughing like a foghorn (*I* wouldn't want to sit next to me!).

So to help improve my attitude while I wait this out, would anybody care to share things they especially like about that area? or anywhere on the north coast really, but Puerto Plata++ is sort of my starter area. I especially like nature tourism options, but anything that people have enjoyed I'd love to hear about.

Thanks!

PS It'd also be good to know -- in what kind of store can you buy face masks and is "mascarilla" the right word for that here?

I loved the slower pace of life compared to the big cities here.  Everything in Puerto Plata is fairly close together, again compared to the big cities.

The Atlantic ocean and the beaches are different then east and south coasts!  The land isn't flat!   Lots of good restaurants and places to drink and dance.

Cons - prices are more  tourism and expat influenced!  Know your prices.

I just came back from the area and didnt care for it that much. Beach was nice and some of the food as well but wouldnt rush back.

Driving thru the mountains back to  Santo Domingo, now that was an adventure!

I haven't spent enough time in PP to have much of an opinion, but I can tell you that most pharmacies will have masks, and mascarilla is the right word.
