Bringing Household Items to DR in December ($3,000 ????)

RoCamilo

Hi everyone!

We are from NYC (I actually was born in DR!) and just bought a condo in Las Terrenas. We have to start furnishing soon. We will be buying the big items there but hoping to bring some of the small items with us. I have been looking at the big local department stores websites and have noticed that home appliances are a lot more expensive there so I am planning to bring as much as we can fit in our luggage, including one or two 32 inch TV's! I heard that bringing big flat screen TV's is not worth it...but I also heard that if you travel in the month of DECEMBER, you can bring up to $3,000 worth of items. Is that true? Does anyone have information about this? I could not find anything in the customs website. It only says you can bring up to $500 worth of items "for gifting"...is that $500 in total or per item? I assume it's in total. In any case, if anyone has any information about the $3,000 tax/duty free exception in the month of December, please let me know as I was planning to travel in November but if that is true, then I will buy my ticket for the first week of December.

Thanks in advance!!!

Anyone has any information they can share??? Thanks!

That is usually created by decree each year and is for Dominicans coming home in December.

We should hear something soon about this.  I cannot remember when they made the announcement last year.

Planner - does that include residents or just Dominicans (citizens/expats)?

planner

As far as I remember it's for just Dominicans!

I shipped a lot of my household items . Whatever i could fit in a barrel  or boxes I shipped it. I used a shipping company I purchased  the jumbo barrel and three large boxes, and  I shipped dishes, pots pans, clothing, even a microwave. For th tv's maybe call or go the the airport and ask about the duty free in December because I shipped one tv and it was not cheap. This year I purchased facebook portal plus  and that was my tv for say, meaning I watch YouTube. I brought all three on the flight with me one per family member as a carry on 5 of us where boarding the flight.

By the way I live in NY (Queens) but we also have a condo there.

Bringing a container and getting exoneration requires residency!  It is not a right based on purchasing property or investing.  It is based on residency which you need to qualify for!

RoCamilo

Thanks Arelis. We're not retiring yet. Investing there is our first step towards that goal. For now, we will be renting the apartment we purchased when we're not using it. I just need to bring some kitchen appliances and hopefully 2 small TV's. I plan to buy the large TV over there. I called a few places to have things shipped but for appliances, it's not worth the extra fee they are charging. Aside from the fact hat it is taking too long right now and they are not responsible if anything is damaged in transit.  I have to go there to open a bank account anyway and wanted to know what (how much worth) items I could bring with me.

Thanks Planner! If you see anything about that decree for Dec 2021 or remember where I found that information. Please post it on this thread. I would really appreciate it!!!

I just saw this article today:

This applies to  Dominicans  and expats with a DOMINICAN   PASSPORT not residents. it is  US $4,000 per family and not items in quantity as that flags for resale!

Also apply for Dominicans returning to live here in DR and include to bring a car tax free.

Dont foreget also  the person must be out of the DR at least a minimun of 6 months, if the Dominican has been recently in DR do not apply for the 4,000.00 tax free option.

planner

Yes the exoneration we were discussing as it applies to expats not Dominicans.

The 4000 tax free at Christmas, agreed!

I am a little confused and worried. I am a US Citizen moving to DR under a Residence Visa. But I was informed that when I get the visa, I have 30 days to travel to DR, and then another 30 days to register for Residency (Cedula with NO VOTE).
While I put in for my residency my furniture sits at Customs, then when I get my papers, then I can goto to Customs (Aduana) and claim my furniture tax free under my residence?

Do I have the process right?
So if it takes a few months to get my residence, my furniture just sits there?

Any assistance you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

planner

You cannot send your personal belongings until your residency is accepted!

Once you get your residency visa you then come here and file for residency!  After that is accepted, then you can send your belongings.  Not before! Otherwise you will be doing it without the residency exoneration and you will be paying tax and duty!

planner

If your items sit in customs you will be paying storage fees that add up quickly!

ddmcghee

Store your items until your residency is approved. The exoneration is worth waiting for, and the port storage fees add up very quickly!

Once your residency is approved, you have 6 months to import your items.
