Medication in Dominican Republic

modaisky1971

@williambrush Valium (or similar) is a controlled substance and you will need a doctor's prescription from here to get that at the pharmacy.  I am not familiar with the other medication.

There is a possibility those are not OTC amd would require a written prescription. I would suggest checking the pharmacy websites or contacting the major pharmacies (Carol Farmacia, being the largest chain), and asking. i would also suggest using the generic rather than brand names when asking.

Both are controlled and require a special prescription to get

@planner I am heading to DR soon and take Tylenol 1 for migraine and other issues.

Can I buy it there or fly into DR with it from Canada as it is considered OTC here.

I take one drug for high blood pressure. It was free for me in the USA while I was working as my company was self insured and wanted employees to take preventative meds. Telemisartan 80 mg I find is pricey in the DR. I paid $85 USD for 28 pills here in Sosua at the major pharmacies in Sosua/Puerto Plata area. However I have found the same medication available in Medellin Colombia for $7 USD for 30 pills. I now buy a years supply when I visit Medellin on the inexpensive direct Arajet flights from Santiago annually. Also, I find soft contact lens solution quite expensive in the DR at almost $18 USD for a 12 oz bottle. I just brought 14 bottles back with me from my annual visit to the USA. It can be bought at Walmart for 6.64 USD for two 12 oz bottles and brought back in checked luggage. You find ways to adapt when you live here.

In preparation for our move I found this DR government website to check and see if my meds were available there and which to toss. You can see brand names are vastly different but you can look up the principal ingredients for something similar. So far I found diuretics and cholesterol meds. Surprisingly benedryl was not found.

Site: msp.gob.do. The site required some patience but it was fairly intuitive even being in Spanish as I am only beginning to learn the language.

@karynllanders

Some other options and work around options , as I do, I have health insurance in the states USA, not sure if your Canada or EU. However, I have all my meds (not controlled) mailed to my MBE box in Mami, and then its forwarded to me in the DR. I do this because if you get health insurance here , depending what insurance company (@planner) is our go to for health insurance here in the DR) not all medicine is covered and then depending on you DR plan a certain yearly peso amount you will be given, its between 150 to 200 bucks , after that is depleted then all medicine is out of pocket.

Please anyone feel free to add on or keep me honest..

Ps saw your from Canada so what i mentioned may not apply, i am American not sure how Canada RX works
