Kid Fun around Samana Bay or north coast?

CJMac

My wife and I would like to vacation in the DR in order to learn more about the country.  We are considering retirement abroad (8-10 years from now) and the DR tops the short list.  We have a 14 year old son who we would bring with us on vacation,  but I am concerned there might not be much to interest him beyond Ocean World and bikinis on the beach.  Not sure if the first trip should be to Samana Bay or maybe Puerto Plata.  Can you folks educate me on kiddo activities and maybe suggest a destination?

Thanks!

Hi,

Here a link related to the Samana Penisula :

Moreover, if interested, there is a Kite Surf School in Las Terrenas/Playa Popy.

The neighborhood is safe, your son could walk alone to the school, there are a lot of accomodation possibilities a few minutes on foot from there. Also a good starting point to tour the Peninsula.

I am not the person to help much on this!

I will welcome you to the forums though!

For an active 14 year old with active parents, there are plenty of activities to liven up your vacation in both destinations if you go beyond the beaches.

I can vouch for the Samana peninsula having lived there for over two years and still return at weekends.

Yes there is a good surf school on Playa Bonita in Las Terrenas. Carolina Surf School.

An lessser known attraction just north of Samana itself is the Dominican Tree House with zip line and plenty of other attractions such as bike, mule and quad trips. A Robinson Crusoe escape for sure as shown in the attached videos parts 1 and part 2 which follows on.

You then have, the Limon waterfall and a boat trip across the bay to visit former pirate caves in Parque Los Haitises.

The attached is a good guide too.

I am not so familiar with the Puerto Plata area but it also has a wide range of activities including kite surfing, waterfalls, various tours, river rafting etc. and will leave others living there to offer advice. The attached will help:

Thanks for the quick responses.  Looks like I have some great information to review!
