Ma, I am coming Home
Ask me if I'm jealous.  lol
Are you jealous ? Lol.
Extremely. It seems like It’s been a long journey but we have enjoyed it. If anything I’ve traveled 6 times to my home on the last year.
And made an incredible friend through this forum. (And his family of course )
February 9th Update.
Its been some months since I have posted on this site. Life has been busy over the past few months and lots has happened with the build. The house is fully built and operational and furnishings are starting to go in.... slowly and thats somewhat by choice. Had a really nice family gathering last Sunday to thank all those involved and those who have given so much to make this dream come true. Below are some updated pics. Im the dope with the very loud red t shirt.

My kind of house, with a big ol' yard.
Looks great. Enjoy it!
very fortunate Grandma allowed us to build there. Great neighborhood en el campo.
As a Dominican from NYC, leaving this shithole is the best decision ever even if you live under a bridge.

LOL. have you left already? Ive been in the NYC area for the better part of 36 years and i for one am tired and want to go home and tend to my garden. LOL> Im appreciative of the opportunities NYC and The states as a whole have given my family and I , but i am ready to leave.
I am about to. But not in a decent financial situation as you are. However life goes on and God is greater than anything.

God sure is Great. Keep working towards your goals.
Wow, I cant believe its been almost 5 years since this post. Quick update, House is built, furnished we have been going twice, trice, 4 times and some years 5 times since our parents are now retired and live RIGHT next door. I have had the ability to work full time from there up to 2 months at a time which is very nice. We are planning to move end of this year as my wife has her 20 years of service at the hospital. i will continue to work remotely on a consulting capacity or even part time.
Everytime I am there I have a great sense of peace and clamnesn which I dont have in NY. Even on the bussiest most stressfull days at work, it feels different. Hard to articulate into words.
Here is the pation

Wow just seen this post for the first time. It was with great pleasure to read your whole thread as the more I read the more I could understand and relate to your feelings. My wife and I are in a similar situation as my wife’s wonderful grandmother of 97 passed on also 2 years ago and my wife decided last year to build a house right next door to grandma’s house in Jima Arriba. Like you we live in the U.S. but visit very frequently and you are so right about the feeling you get when you are in the DR. It’s hard to explain but you just feel so much better about life there. Now last October my wife had went down there without me as we still have a son in school. I had found a a picture of a new home build in La Vega and asked my wife to go take a look at it. Well to make a long story short we did not purchase that one but are building something almost identical and are now into the 5th month of construction on our new home. My wife is actually there right now picking out all the tiles and having the furniture maker start making the beds and furnishings. Home should be finished by June so we will be going down and spending the entire summer there I cannot wait. Very sorry if I went off track with your post but it just got me thinking. I wish you the best of luck and many years of blessings in your new home it looks absolutely beautiful.
@DRforme happy for all you I'm in the process of purchasing land hopefully in the next two years I can post that I'm moving in
@DRforme Thank you for sharing and I am glad you are able to relate to the feeling. Some people go to DR even as returning Dominicans and they mostly party and travel, which is totally fine, to each is own. For me it takes a whole different meaning; Im sure being almost 50 has a lot to do with it, but i just want to be home and work on the house or the patio. Im sure having worked and gone to school my entire life since the age of 13 also has a lot to do with that dynamic.
I am going down in mid May and will most likely stay there for the better part of the summer also finishing up some last things we want to do while we wrap things up here in the US. My wife will come down periodically to enjoy the place also and to spend time with family.
I am happy to hear you are engage in the building process. ENJOY it and be present. Try to not fall trap to the builder's "eso e lo que se ta usando ahora" rethoric. Build to your liking!!!! you will eventually have to live with the decision you or the builder make. Be sure to build with YOUR NEEDS in mind. NOt the builders'. LOL. I have had Many discussions about , lo que se ta usando ahora is not what I want and thus far have had things done to how we want it. My unsolicited 2 cents. .Anything you think i can help with, feel free to ask me for input, I have gone thorugh the process and learned a lot in the journey.

Thank you for the reply, yes we are building to our liking which is why we did not purchase the finished house as we wanted a few things done differently. We actually made out better by doing it this way as we got a bigger lot and a bigger house for almost the same price. My wife is a very good Dominican negotiator our builder wants to hide when he sees her coming.🤣🤣 I will say that our builder has been doing a great job on the house he has actually done some extra nice things on the house that we did not expect. But like you say you need to ensure that things get done the way you want especially the tile selection that’s why my wife went down last week to oversee that part. Hopefully when I get back down there at the end of May it will be completed. I know you are not to far from La Vega you are welcome to come visit us this summer for some poolside Presidente and BBQ. Well thanks again for your offer of assistance and will definitely keep in touch. ðŸ‘
@tcantey
That’s great news whereabouts are you purchasing.
Hi Friends,
Well we did it. We are now 5 months living in DR in the home we dreamt, worked to and ultimately built here. Thus far I can honestly say that living here is MUCH better than we anticipated. The way of life is just different, the daily noises of the world are relatively muted here. Its a much slower pace living here.
My wife after 22 years of working at a NYC hospital is now enjoying her early retirement/taking a break status. She will ultimately go back and do 2 month travel assignments but mostly on her terms.
I work remote and try to stay under 4o hours a week, but that gets hard at times. But I like my job.
Now to the really important things, I get to live literally next door to my parents who I havent lived this close since I was 15 years old. Is amazing to see the kind of loving, caring & nurturing people they are and always were. I live everyday in awe of their generosity, not in material things, but in how they give of their time to care and help others in the community. I already knew this, but seeing it really brings it to life. I am thankful that I get to witness this, as I feel that I am becoming a better person, just watching from afar and joining in when asked or possible.
anyways, just wanted to give an update 6 years later from original post. .
below is a pic of the house today.
Its so surreal to look back at this and how much has changed since then. I posted this originally like 5 years ago.
