Ambergris Caye - West side vs East side

Caltu

Hi,

I was comparing waterfront lots (for sale) on Ambergris Caye and noticed that East side is more populated than West side. Could you please help me to understand the difference between these two sides. West side beaches and water looks cleaner than the east ones.

Thank you,

On the island most of the development is up North in the Boca del Rio & prestigous Tres Cocos area, or down South past the airstrip.  The West side is where you'll find all of the hotels, restaurants, tour guide companies, etc, and it's pretty well built up.

The East is called the back of the island, where you'll find the lagoon.  It simply has not been developed much up to this point, probably because it's not ocean front, and partially due to road access.  The only time I went back there was to get fuel at the Texaco station or eat at the Sunset Grill.  A lot of locals live on the back side of the island though.

Hope that helps.  Sharon

The prevailing breezes/wind come from the east, so the east side is cooler and has fewer mosquitos courtesy of the wind.  The closer to the beach the better.  Also, the color of the water and the view of the reef is unbeatable!  Prices are higher on the beach side, though, of course.

Yes, I just realized I reversed the sides in my response in error (never reply on a Sunday!).  The West side is the back of the island by the lagoon.  I lived on that side and while mosquitos may be less, the sand flies were awful! Every morning and night I got eaten alive, so beware!  Again, sorry for the mix up!
