Be sure to check out Carmelita Gardens on the Belize River just north of San Ignacio.  Amazing off-grid community.

First, visit different areas and see what you like and what you don't like.  Check out island living, beaching life, inland life, jungle life and see what you like. Then rent a place for at least 6 months before you looking for a place to buy.

Hello Phil, I'm still doing a lot of research from the UK, and for me I'm still 3 years away from retiring, also despite travelling places like Mexico & Costa Rica, have never been to Belize. The big draw for me is it's likeness to both of these in it's natural beauty, I love nature and also do a bit of scuba diving, but it's also the fact English is the main language.

So have you got a property and now settling in to life in Belize ?

@stevebiffin - We are in about the same position. Just closing on property on the Belize River this month. Now we need to plan a build and get things organized. Surely a few years out. We flew into Belize City and spent two weeks traveling down the coast from Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Dandriga, Hopkins, Placencia, then to San Ignacio, Santa Elena, Santa Familia, Spanish lookout. Didn’t make it to the far north area. We loved the coast but really felt at home in the inland area.  Finally settled on the San Ignacio area, actually Carmelita Gardena in Santa Familia. Looking forward to establishing ourselves in Belize!
