TV work in Saigon

ALifeLessAverage

I am a television professional looking to move to Saigon next year from Dunedin New Zealand to do some study extramurally, I will have a retainer for living costs which I think will be enough, however I am curious if there are television jobs for expats in Saigon or anywhere in Vietnam? I am experienced in television production, presentation (for a TV channel) as well as a camera operator with plenty of field and studio experience. I am not super hopeful but would be good to know if I had that to fall back on should I need it. Just testing the waters here, if you've heard of any one working in television in VN I would love to hear from you. Thank you!

Can you speak Vietnamese, as that's what you will need to get a job.

Maybe work for a foreign production company, but I seriously doubt you will get a job in VN television.

ALifeLessAverage

Don't speak Vietnamese. Those were my thoughts exactly... thank you

Hello ALifeLessAverage,
Welcome to the forum!

There are jobs mostly in Digital Media Design and Production, Digital Marketing etc. etc.
You may have to search for relevant yet slightly different job profiles . .. like .

Another option is to get in touch directly with select media production houses.  Just google them.

Yes, you will have to try your luck hard as most such hands-on jobs will require you to speak Vietnamese.

A few universities/institutions run Digital Media (Design & Production) courses in English. That could be another option.

Good luck!

Hi sewl thank you so much for the leads on the television agencies that is so helpful! I'll investigate further :-)

ALifeLessAverage

Very true. I know it's a long shot but just looking at options. As I said I can get by without work, so anything that comes up would be a bonus. Thank you!

You can be a Teacher too in some school here, that like to hire Native English Speaker and definitely white. it's another option for you too. but you need to get a Tesol Certificate to get a Work Permit.

ALifeLessAverage

Thanks Allan, yes I knew English teaching would be an option for me,  probably will look at getting a TESOL before I come over

If you would like to continue working as TV presenter in Viet Nam, I suggest you contact with VTV - the national TV station of Viet Nam for your business. As far as I'm concerned, they sometimes have demand for native speaker/presenters to perform TV shows/news in English and as a TV professional, I think you would have some opportunity  ;)

ALifeLessAverage

Thank you singuyen! I will get in touch with them and see if there's any opportunities for me :-)

Hi Allan, I wasn't sure if teaching would be an option for me as I don't have a university degree, only a diploma. I can get a TESOL type qualification however I am not sure if this would be enough to get a job that would help me with a working permit. I know this is a topic that comes up a lot in these forums, and a lot of people say you can still get work as a English teacher without a university qualification, however I don't really want to run the risk of being fined and deported for 'illegally' working as a teacher
