What district to stay in HCM?

yudirajput
Hi,

I will be arriving to HCM on June 1.

I will really appreciate if anyone can advise what district to stay for a week.

Preferences will be for somewhere away from night clubs/pubs.

Any valuable suggestions/advise will be highly appreciated !

Thanks,

Yudi

@yudirajput I suggest District 2 as there are many expatriates there and it is also quiet

You mean a quiet place?

It doesn't exist in Vietnam.

Try D4 there iare a few hotels & apartments next to  river, icon 56, Tresor just a short walk across bridge to D1 .

Ive stayed at Tresor - modern, pool, has shops at ground level.

Google maps D4 hcmc then click on hotels that should gove you some to pick from.

Nice walk at night plenty of st food and locals chilling along the path into D1.

I lived in Binh Thanh district for several years, in an apartment building directly across the canal from the zoo.   I believe there are a couple of hotels nearby,  and you could probably get a short -term rental apartment in the building.  No nightclubs or pubs nearby, although there are small bars a few blocks away.  The street by the canal was quieter than most streets because it wasn't a through street but rather curved up at the main streets at either end.  You could hear the elephants trumpet, though.

It would help to know your budget.

If your main concern is noise at night and naptime, I recommend staying in one of the nicer hotels in D1.

My personal favorite is

I've stayed there many times and really enjoy the historic location.

The breakfast buffet in the old courtyard is especially nice.

You can see prices of many agencies on the Google Maps profile.

Currently the best price I'm seeing there is on the hotel website (that link is also on the Google Maps profile).

IMO, I would avoid Agoda in Vietnam.

I've had too many surprises when attempting to book with them (bed size not guaranteed, fees added at the very end of the booking).

Booking.com (in Vietnam) always gives me the full price up front and almost always guarantees bed/room size.

in The little Japan in Saigon ( Le Thanh Ton street, Ben Nghe ward, ditsrict 1, HCMC ) or can google map best massage therapy named Enjoy leading right to the place. All costing reasonable.

If cost is a factor, you might consider Go Vap district. I've been living here since I arrived in Jan. 2016. Although there are certainly some noisy areas, the area I live in near the new Cityland complex is fairly quiet for Vietnam and the cost of living is one of the lowest in HCMC.

Suprised you mention Agoda Ive use over 60 times never had a problem apart from pools not being there when we arrived, but it was some info on the other booking sites so no idea why they said it had a pool.

Yes Agoda is price before tax and service fee 10% +5% if you look at google maps and click on the hotel on left prices come up for booking sites for same hotel to compare prices

The Hotel you mentioned - same night same room - Booking was 2,167,541vnd Agoda total price was 2,002,129vnd

So it does pay to compare and shop around

@OceanBeach92107

Agreed with that with booking.com I never had any bad experience. I never used agoda before so can't really comment on it but noted on your comment for Agoda and I appreciate you shared this here.

I will be in HCM only for a week and may be less depending on the situation (i.e. jetlag ) because I will be flying from Toronto and its gonna be a long flight with couple of lay overs before landing in HCM )

Looking into the link you sent for Hotel in D1.

Thanks a lot OB for the useful information as always much appreciated mate!

cheers,
yudirajput
@drutter Noted with "Go Vap" and looking into it. I understand it is not possible to find the quietest area anywhere but even less noisy or less quiet will work for us.

Thanks a lot for the valuable information.1f44d.svg

As OceanBeach said, Hotel Continental is a good choice if you can afford it (around $120 a night, maybe cheaper for a single, as always try booking with the hotel direct and ask if that's the best they can do). Refurbished, French-colonial charm, Graham Greene wrote "The Quiet American" there as a long-term guest in Room 214. It puts you right in the centre of town within an easy stroll of everything, not all that noisy depending on the room (mine was quiet).

Good points.

FYI, I just checked the lowest rates on the hotel website for a week there (2 persons) and got â‚« 2,036,857 VNÄ ($87.83 USD) per night, including the breakfast buffet and all taxes/fees for the "superior" room.

The rate is slightly lower for 1 person, because they discount 1 less breakfast buffet.

I prefer the "Opera View" rooms, though the trees sometimes block the view of the Opera House.

This was my view the last time I was there...

Oh, and if you're staying at the Continental, stroll across the square past the Opera to the Caravelle Hotel and have a cocktail at the bar on the top floor. Journalists used to congregate there during the Vietnam War -- sorry, American War -- to get daily briefings from the American bigwigs and watch the often violent goings-on down below.

The Rex hotel was:

During the Vietnam War, the hotel was the site of the United States military command's daily press conference, derisively named Five O'Clock Follies by cynical journalists who found the optimism of the American officers misguided. The daily event was hosted by Barry Zorthian, chief spokesperson for the U. S. government in Saigon from 1964-68.. Its rooftop bar was a well-known hangout spot for military officials and war correspondents.

It appears that they had briefings at several hotels. The Caravelle catered to Europe and British empire and Rex to the Americans. Seems that what was in common were the rooftop bars.

I’ve stayed at the Rex and found the history and pictures very interesting.
