Job networking for foreigners

Petele

Hi, I am Australian and I have been to Vietnam a few times and love it, especially the coffee culture. I am of a senior age with a long career in program management, project management, strategy planning, financial management, process excellence, performance measurement and looking for any job opportunities in Vietnam. I have worked in Saudi, Dubai and Singapore across various industries (IT, Cybersecurity, Banking and Finance, Utilities, Roads & Transport).

Can any provide some guidance on how I can network with people to better understand the job market in Vietnam?

AusCham is probably the best place to start. As a non-Australian, I can't give you any info about them; I've just heard the name. This is from their website:

"The Australian Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (AusCham) is an independent, not for profit, membership-based NGO. Its revenue is generated through memberships, sponsorships, events and advertising. AusCham provides all members with a voice to express their views on the business environment in Vietnam, directly within the business community and via our liaison with the Vietnamese Government through the VBF (Vietnam Business Forum). AusCham actively co-ordinates a regular program of high-profile business seminars, networking and social functions as well as a number of charity events in the year."

Hello, I did not heard ever about the AusCham web before, in my hands LinkedIn is also a good one to start. But be patient to find something concern to IT further than HekpDesk. The DigitalTransformation in Vietnam is in progress but not yet as popular as you could expect

You've had some good feedback from a couple of guys who each have some understanding of how to go about getting connected over here.

Maybe the most important thing to understand (IMHO) is the fact that there is a ton of scamming and misinformation and deception on the internet, so attempting to network with people here long distance can be somewhat risky and often futile.

It seems to me that the more legitimate a business or a business person is here, the more they appreciate getting to know you face to face.

I'm usually a stickler for not referring people away from this website, but experience here has shown me time and again that the "Internations" (dot ORG) website consistently has the best networking meetup opportunities and an interface that helps people find what they need and be found.

If you are serious in your search then I highly recommend you pay for the membership upgrade. You really can't do anything with that site using the free membership option.

I had some good success with them attending functions in Hanoi and HCMC.

Good luck with your search!

Thanks for the advice, and I totally agree about internet scams (I have over 11 years of experience in cybersecurity) and also prefer f2f. I'm coming to HCMC tomorrow for 4 days, so my plan was to try and connect here and setup some meetings while in HCMC.

@ajairon

Thanks for the advice. Coming from working with a global bank in Singapore, my expectation is that Vietnam may not be as advanced in the cybersecurity/IT space. Actually, it's why I considered looking in Vietnam. There may be some demand for my experiences. I have looked at LinkedIn and applied for roles, but I rarely hear anything back. I'm on this site more to try and set up some face-to-face catch-ups with people in the industry. It's typically who you know, not what you know, in some countries.

Thanks for the Advice. I will reach out to AusCham. I hope to set up some catch-ups to learn more about the Vietnam job market in my space.Â
