Does anyone have experience with the AVSE-TESOL in Vietnam?

Laurenlcr

Hello!

I am looking to teach abroad. I do not have any experience teaching but I do have an undergraduate and masters degree in the environmental science realm. Ultimately, I am unhappy in my position at work in the US and unhappy living in the US. I grew up overseas in 7 different countries and am itching to go back and live that lifestyle again. I also do not think I am built to sit behind a desk and click my life away, which is how I currently feel at my job. Everyday I think about living overseas. Everything I am reading online about the AVSE-TESOL in Vietnam looks so positive, however I would love to hear other peoples opinions if you have heard about this course or have any other suggestions for similar courses. Any info is appreciated!! Thank you :)

Hello!

Hello Laurenlcr , and welcome to the expat.com Vietnam forum.

I am looking to teach abroad. I do not have any experience teaching but I do have an undergraduate and masters degree in the environmental science realm.

As a native English teacher, holding both an undergrad and masters, not having teaching experience is not an impediment to your legally teaching English here.

I invite you to review the thread titled, New Foreign English Teachers Requirements Decision 4159/QD-BGDDT for the requirements for you to do so.

A sentiment shared by many folk in the expat community. You certainly are not alone.

Sorry I can't give you any opinion regarding any TESOL programs, having never taught English as a 2nd language. From that linked thread it appears that "the training program" mentioned there would negate the requirement for such.

Once again, welcome to the forum. Feel free to ask any further questions you might have, or to jump in and contribute to any of our ongoing discussions/threads, here. Good to have you with us.

I made an error in my reply to you. Apologies for any confusion.

Where I said "As a native English teacher, holding both an undergrad and masters...", what I meant to say was "As a native English speaker..."

Have a good look at this website (keep scrolling) that lists job openings and schools/companies, allows you to post your resume if you want to, provides tips and advice (although I can't endorse/vouch for the services they offer, having never used them before - *caution*), etc.

Anywayz, it can help you get a feel for the education market in VN, which you should know can be very sketchy/dodgy/dicey/chancy/risky/shady, etc. (*caution*)

Here's a recent example:

Hundreds of Vietnamese parents blindsided as English school shuts down after collecting $250,000

Another thing you note is that there are a number of different types of teaching from kindergarten up to "international schools" and corporate training, including some demand for *science* teachers:

The main problem is that you lack experience, which having some certification would help alleviate.

The program you mention is not well known. Most schools/teachers consider the Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA), accredited by Cambridge English Language Assessment as the piece of paper to have, so you might consider that. But there are many other ones...

What schools are mostly really looking for are people who are responsible/reliable, don't complain/freak out much (flexible), can handle the students though discipline/edutainment, and are enthusiastic/outgoing.

So, do some due diligence, including watching tons of "teaching in Vietnam" videos on youtube.

This school and its teachers are incredible! They not only teach you how to educate others, but they also prepare you for living and thriving here. The hands-on training ensures you're ready for the job they help you find. It's the best decision I've ever made! I love them. Stay with Mr. Lake; the rooms may be simple, but it's quiet, near the school in Ho Chi Minh City, and Mr. Lake personally looks after you. I HIGHLY recommend it, as you are thoroughly prepared for any situation while making lifelong friends!
