Best SIM or Internet Option for Big Downloads While Traveling Vietnam?

MaxG96

Hey everyone! 👋

I’m a video editor and I’ll be traveling around Vietnam, mostly in Gia Lai, Bình Thuận, and Long An. I often need to download 10-20GB+ files daily, so I’m looking for fast and reliable internet (ideally 100Mbps+) to keep up with my work.

I’ll be arriving soon and haven’t figured this part out yet. I need to do my job while traveling, so any help is really appreciated!

Here’s what I’m looking for:

  1. A SIM or data plan with at least 150–200GB per month
  2. No strict daily data caps (like 10GB/day) — that limits my ability to work
  3. Strong 4G/5G coverage, including rural areas
  4. Where to buy a SIM and which provider (Viettel, Vinaphone, etc.) is best
  5. And is it okay to work from cafés in Vietnam? Can I download large files on café Wi-Fi?

Thanks in advance for any advice! ðŸ™

Would love to hear from others who’ve worked remotely in Vietnam.

I have an UNLIMITED DATA Viettel prepaid plan. Its 160k a month. Its pretty much data only however I can get and make calls. I can get texts but cannot send. Viettel is pretty much everywhere in Vietnam. 5G in all cities and in the country service is still quite good. Ive used between 10-15gb regularly per day and not run into any kind of data caps. When I travel I typically sync data with my dropbox server regularly and need a lot of data similar to you.

One word of advice I can give you working remotely in Vietnam is that its quite normal to spend half a day or so working in a coffee shop with great and fast wifi. I do that quite regularly when I travel although I do have an apartment in Saigon where I do most of my work.

Hello, don't worry about prices, you can find a prepaid with 500gb/30days for less than $15. Viettel and Mobifone are the best. If you want to use your roaming-phonenumber, sometimes one or the other works depending the zone you are. Weird behaviour, with Mobifone I couldnt get roaming connection in Gia Lai, but it works fine in main cities.

What you should take care is about where your storage is located.  If your storage is at your company's building in Sri Lanka or USA, you must know the connection has a bottleneck to some countries and the throughput is under 3Mbps with latencies rounding 300ms.  In my personal experience I download 10Gb in 4 hours to my home (128mbps) from my endpoint in San Diego, LA, 320mbps. (you know the difference between mpbs and Mbps)

If you use cloud services from Google Drive or MS Onedrive, the issue is less maddening  because their mirrors are in Singapore and 10Gb are downloaded in 1 hour

If you’re traveling in Vietnam, I recommend using a mobile SIM card with a 30-day data package to stay connected to your work on the go. For reliable internet access, hotels, homes, and cafés offer fast Wi-Fi—often quicker than what you’d find in your home country.

Hi, thank you very much for the reply.

Can you please tell me the name of the package if you know it? I think this will work if I can download large files and it doesn't have data caps.

Hey yeah, last year I stayed in Saigon for 3 months and I visited several coffee shops. I like the O'Hara Kafe.

Hi, thanks a lot for the helpful reply!

I mostly download raw footage from Brandfolder (a DAM platform), but I’m not sure where their servers are located.

Right now, I can usually download 10GB in under 30 minutes, so I’m curious to see how that will change in Vietnam. I really appreciate the heads-up about the possible bottlenecks and latency issues.

I will definitely check out Viettel and Mobifone SIMs. Thanks again for the insights : )

Hi, thanks for replying!

Yeah, I’m planning to book a few coworking spaces just in case of emergencies, but I’m really hoping the SIM will be enough so I can stay flexible and travel freely. Appreciate the tip!

I dont know the name of the package. They gave me a bunch of options and I picked one of the unlimited plans they had. Price may be higher now as I think thats how it generally works.

Scroll down to "Service Plans". Then, arrow-right to N300-CD (12gb/day, 300K VND/month). Continue arrow-right for higher plans.

Hope that helps.

@jrharvey

Hey no worries, I will check this at their store. Thanks

HI Aidan, Thanks for the link. It has what I need. You are a lifesaver!

The biggest one I found is the 12MFV at Mobifone. 400gb/month + free YouTube and Facebook.

But is an annual subscription of 3,000,000 vnd.

Good point.

Also, I'll add that Viettel has a history of discontinuing specific services plans while continuing to promote them on their website.

@berpasfrvn

If I can get this for like 3 months or sth, that would be great. but I will check. Thanks

Yeah, Thanks. I will keep that in mind : )
