Consumer Protection in Thailand?

hugh_2121

I recently had a problem with a Thai Bank so I asked BRITISH LAW company on Third Road for advice. They recommended a complaint under the Consumer Protection Act. Yes, there is one! Also there is a Consumer Protection Board office in City Hall Pattaya. You can email complaints and all business is conducted in English. Following advice, my wife and I approached the bank manager who had caused the problem. She spoke very aggressively to my wife in rapid Thai so I interrupted her in English and told her that I had consulted my lawyer and had been informed that her actions were contrary to the Consumer Protection Act and that I would be making a complaint to the Board. Her attitude changed immediately and a refund of monies charged improperly has been arranged. There is a mechanism here in Thailand to prevent these big powerful institutions from steam rollering the little guy. I hope that more people can make use of this piece of info. Extract:Section 4.
The consumer has the following rights of protection:
(1) the right to receive correct and sufficient information and description as to the quality of goods or services;
(2) the right to enjoy freedom in the choice of goods or services;
(3) the right to expect safety in the use of goods or services;
(3 bis) the right to a fair contract;
(4) the right to have the injury considered and compensated in accordance with the laws on such matters or with the provisions of this Act.
