Welcome to the forum Fish83.

As you have had no responses I will throw my hat into the ring. In Australia we had private health cover and was around AU 6K a year for intermediate cover, before we moved here I looked at many private health insurers here and they were a little dearer (I was 58 at the time) but what I didn't like was the older you got either the premiums rose or the benefits reduced based on your age.

Insurance companies are maggots no matter health, car etc.

What we did was stuck money into an investment account to be self funded earning 5% interest and also the 6/7K a year after 5 years that we saved not paying the maggots well more than pays for open heart surgery etc.

We do pay PhilHealth which costs us around AU 450 per year and that will get you into a decent private hospital with no waiting.

If you have existing problems coming here they don't want to know you.

Good luck.

Cheers, Steve.

@bigpearl

Gotta agree with everything you've said. PC are complete bustards, just like all insurance companies.  205k a year with pre-existing. Can I ask where did you invest,  here or Oz. Macquarie Bank are doing Term Deposits 5k @ 4.5%

Hey Mark.

Ours is with Suncorp and I see these days are down to around 4.55%, matters little really but if you are able best to stick it into your superannuation and get around 10% with dividends taxable @ 15% instead of your marginal rate. Look into all that stuff but for us here was around AU 8K a year with certain limitations, we decided to self insure and only have PhilHealth which cost us about AU 620 buck a year and as said in other posts gets you into hospital either a private or public room and generally knocks off around 30% of the bill.

I look back and over 6 years living here have been to hospital once for a couple of days and the bill was a little over AU 1K including 2 nights in hospital, CT scan, 2 x ultrasounds, x-rays, blood tests and crappy food, I'm still alive and kicking, still have my AU 50K in the bank and in 6 years have saved near AU 50K in the insurance rip off.

No brainer really like going off grid with our solar, don't look back, only forward. We do reluctantly insure the cars though but not too bad.

Good luck with your choice.

Cheer, Steve.
