New Member : Salary expectation in Malaysia

M-Q

Hello everyone!

I am new here, I would like to know the monthly living expenses for one person in Petaling jaya. Please note that I am single person and I would prefer living in a studio room.

At the moment, I am negotiating salaries of my offer for a 3D Artist position there. Upon accepting I will be moving from Jordan to Malaysia.

I have 2 degrees; one is a Bachelor degree in architecture and design from Jordan, the second one is Master's in Computer Animation from England. I have short term experiences that are equivalent to 1 year of experience in the entertainment industry and teaching. I also speak three languages which two of them are important for the company.

I was offered a starting salary of 2500 RM / month regarding the fact that I don't exactly have a direct experience as a 3D artist. However they said that they will look into it further.

Personally i think 2500 is quite low and a bit unfair to be treated as an entry level employee. Especially, since I already have indirect experience in the field and a master's degree which prepared me directly to  compete in the market.

Please share you knowledge and opinion.

Regards

I think RM2500 seems really low unless you are a Malaysian and even then it would be like a fairly standard salary, nothing special at all. However, I am a firm believer that you should prove your ability in order to be well rewarded as qualifications do not equate to good performance, ability or possessing initiative.

But when looking at your qualifications, I really wonder why you are applying for a job in Malaysia at all. Seems you would do far better looking for a job in a western country. Or at least look in places like Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai etc.

With only one year work experience it may be a problem getting a work permit (the minimum is 2-3 years). It is also the absolute lowest salary possible to get a Professional Pass Category III.

I think the problem will be getting accommodation cheap enough to survive on the offered salary, as studios will be from RM1500 per month. You may need to Flat Share to make ends meet To check out rentals in the required area or

Apart from that you will need RM800-1000 to live off (internet, phone, food, transport).

If you are really good at what  you do, with those qualifications forget about trying to make it in Malaysia (although I know there are award winning studios here).  Frankly, I am very surprised you are getting a job offer as there are Malaysians who can do the job. Immigration may well block the work permit. The issue will also be trying to justify a good salary when it's time to move on.....

Basically it is an insulting offer for an expat, who cannot live within a local network - so everything costs double up without local suppport and knowledge. Ask them to offer you paid accommodation as an extra.

I also believe the same it's pretty low for an expat. In terms of ability, I understand that qualifications don't match up with experience or good performance, however for 3D artists jobs in general our portfolio and works are what matter the most *It's the main measure for a good performance*. I am pretty confident with my 3D skills as my portfolio shows quality work higher than someone with an entry level .

I am currently applying abroad so Malaysia is one of the options I have at the moment. I am considering other options of course like Japan and other Asian countries. As for the west I am not quite sure, I was already offered 2 jobs in England however no one was actually willing to sponsor Visas or such, not to mention it's a tough time... Brexit and so ...

Thank you for your reply, and sharing the estimation of living expenses.

I honestly prefer living on my own rather than sharing an apartment.
I felt that it was a bit insulting honestly, especially considering the fact that I am moving out to a totally new country.

In terms of accommodation they only provide assistance for that, not to mention that they are not willing to pay for a one way travel ticket. I guess I will have to negotiate further and see otherwise I will look somewhere else.

Gravitas

The employer does not sound very serious, if they can't even be bothered to offer a flight ticket.  I don't really get it -  are they playing with you?  I mention this because there is actually a minimum paid-up capital that a company has to produce in order to get a visa for a foreigner. With that sort of money required, how come they cant find a couple of thousand ringgit for travel.  It is, altogether, a very strange and disrespectful treatment of a potential lady employee. Please do not on any account agree to pay anything for "visa processing", "initial accommodation", "registration" etc. Those are ploys used in job scams (and there are plenty of them in Malaysia). I am genuinely concerned about the type of company it may be.....

This salary is for Babysitter or maid here.
Also local cheap job. Don't think seriously to this job.
