Dependent Work Visa for Spouse

padu40

Dear All

I am an expat working in Malaysia and I would like to bring my wife to KL but I am unable to figure out if she can work on a dependent pass ? She is a musician by qualification and also an NGO worker. Please do throw some light on this. Thanks a lot in advance

Cheers

The good news is that if she can find a job then she can send in her offer letter to immigration to get her dependent pass endorsed (a stamp is applied to the passport) which says she has the right to work. The minimum salary has to be RM5k per month. There is no work for foreigners in the UN sector because of the host agreement, but there may be some iunpaid volunteering available (which does not require the stamp to be applied).

Thanks a lot Gravitas. Couple of more questions. How much does it cost for the stamping ?
Also, I know this is not a great question to ask but do you think being an expert at Music teaching she can find a job as a Music teacher ? Any thoughts on that

Gravitas

There is no cost.

The international schools are currently hiring. I saw several openings for music teachers a couple of months ago. Try the online Times Educational Supplement job site and do some general Google searches as they do return various results. Another way is to go to the websites of the various schools.

Thanks a lot Gravitas. Will research and come back to you if I have any questions

Easier to get a work permit from experience. Although it is a matter of luck as rules get applied unevenly

Jumping in on the topic to ask my quite similar question – what about for dependents of diplomats? I was told that normally, we're not allowed to work because of the diplomatic visa that was issued but is freelancing ok? I'm a writer/tv journalist/model/host by profession. Thanks!

Gravitas

Carolific - as long as you dont get paid by a Malaysian company and have any form of employment in the local market.

Thanks for the info!

Adding a similar question.. My spouse is already here on a dependent pass. Can she look for work and before she starts apply for a work permit through the proper channel?

Hello everyone,

Similar question again, my husband has a offer from a company at KL, and we are planning to move there in a month.

I have few queries if you can help.
1. The company is providing a dependent visa for me,but what about the work permit? How can i apply? (I am a BE. Electronics and a choreographer/Dance teacher)
I wont mind doing any of these work.

2. Is 8k myr enough for family of two? , can we save? (We live very moderate lifestyle)

3. Is vegeterian food easily available?

Thanks in Advance.

1. Since you are EE engineer better join as S/w engineer you may get job faster than expected but in semiconductor industries bit difficult ( if you get bit need to travel).
2. 8K in KL it depends which area...with kids quite difficult to save.
3. Veg no concern... Also you can cook at home ...many indian grocery shops.
