Tourist Stay Extensions

sdstenberg

Hi, I mistakenly believed that Malaysia allowed Canadian Tourists to stay for 180 days, the same as Mexico does.  Thinking that, I booked accommodation on Penang Island for 6 months for next Winter.  Then of course, I found out the maximum stay is 90 days.  Unfortunately, the accommodation does not allow changes or refunds after they are initially made.  My question is, what are the chances of getting my stay extended and 'how' do I go about it?  The Embassy in Vancouver tells me that it 'may' be possible, but I will have to wait until I am actually in Penang to go to the Immigration Office there and see if they will give an extension.  Of course that brings up the problem of knowing when to arrange the flight home, ... after 90 days or after 180???  Does anyone have any ideas???  Apparently you can't just go to Thailand for a few days and come back and start over.

I crossed into Thailand, returned the same day, and got a new 90 day visa - UK passport

However, that was a good few years ago so check that nothing has changed

We are from the US, but we were there last year and we made several trips to Thailand and also Singapore and our 90 days started over each time we came back into Malaysia.  Did they change this since last year?
