Check the site for so much advice you will be reading for a long time. It has many fora and a good search function.
Look out for scams around Nanjing Dong lu (tea scam, art sale). As retired americans you will attract these 2 scammers (usually polite 'students' working in pairs) like a magnet.
You can have a very nice time here and many chinese are very nice people. However, the poorer people in Shanghai have no problem lieing and cheating. There are pickpockets who prey on newbie tourists as there are in every city so take care of your belongings.
By the way, no Chinese will admit there is anything bad happening in China as China (and they) would lose face.

Local people do not always speak English and many locals do not even understand each other. JW

Hi there. Do not worry, shanghai is a modern city and you should have no problem moving around. The only problem is taxi driver do not speak english so it's better to have the places you want to go in chinese. You can ask the hotel to help you.

Let me know if you need help or if you have any specific questions.
