Cost of living in Shanghai - 10 000 RMB after tax. good deal?

rb2980

Hi I'm Rodney and I'm from the United States. I have been offered and am considering a couple different jobs in China. The problem is I'm not sure if the salary will allow me to save some while having a good time in China. Is 10,000 RMB after taxes enough for that? My housing and utilities have already been deducted from my salary and 10,000 RMB is what I would have let each month. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Harmonie,
Thank you for welcoming me. Have you ever been to Shanghai?

Depends how much "fun" you want to have, and what standards you have. prices are like any big city- you can eat and drink paying NYC prices, or eat street food and greasy spoons for $2 usd a meal. Its up to you. 10,000 rmb is a decent monthly for a local alone. Cooking is cheaper but, imports like cheese, good coffee, and cereal cost a pretty penny. ($10 usd for box of cereal)

Do you plan on traveling around Asia much while you are here? I think that will cost a lot as well- flights to visit Japan, Taiwan for the weekend, etc. Travelling around china is pretty affordable.

you can check and compare cost of living on this useful site:

And like anywhere else in the world, your actual cola depends on your lifestyle. 10.000RMB after tax and accom is certainly doable in my opinion. It's an average salary for English teachers here, and they seem to have a good time mostly hehe. It won't be a living la vida loca lifestyle, but good enough.

Hello Rodney,
10k/month you can surely have a decent life. But it would also be difficult to save.
