Moving with a teenager to Beijing

danirhia

We are moving to Beijing this summer with our 15 year old daughter.  Any tips on how to make the transition smooth and help her settle once there?   Things to do, see etc

I think you should lean some simple Chinese in advance, Chinese people do not speak English well. and summer in Beijing is very hot, bring some sun block :)

yes, you should learn some easy chinese first, and travel beijing .

The first thing to do is the language because is the main thing that can block a person in her relations with other people:classmates, professors and expecially in everyday life.
After that you can have a very good trip around the city, in order to get closed, familiar with it...and than it's matter of time and character of your daughter...good luck!

Thanks we have got 100 hrs of language lessons before we come hopefully this will be enough to get her started....

Do you mean that you are relocating to Beijing for an extended period or just that you will be for the summer hols?

If you are relocating why not contact your daughter's school and see if they have a support programme for newly arriving pupils.

You might also want to consider enrolling her in a Chinese language school or maybe the American Embassy Summer Camp (do not have to be American)?

Also if you are relocating might be good to let her go shopping with you to find all the little things that turn a new house into a new home.

Oh also spend some time with her on local area orientation, so that she will comfortable going by herself to the shops and home again.

Both she and you should get hold of a taxi book - a book of addresses that you can show to the taxi driver so that you can point and explain to him where to go.  Still a useful idea even if you have your own car and driver.

Also get yourselves Chinese mobile phone numbers.

If she is a BIG Facebook user then make sure to get a Proxy/ VPN / Tunnel before you arrive.
