Taxes for expats in China

Cheryl

Hello everyone,

When settling in and living in China, you will also need to navigate the local tax system. In order to help newcomers and expats ease their tax-related experience, we would like to invite you to share your experience.

What are the taxes applicable to expats in China?

Have there been any recent changes in tax regulations that expats should know about?

Are there any local tax incentives or agreements with your home country?

Have you come across any unexpected or unusual local tax?

What do you wish you had known earlier about taxes in China?

Share your insights and experience.

Thank you for your contribution.

20 years in China, we are both now retired. My company managed my taxes with tax equalization, my wife paid hers directly in China and reported on our joint return.

Her income was excludable since it was all for a foreign company in China.

you are required to file an annual individual income tax return each year by March. There is an app that is fairly simple and friendly.

key things you MUST have in order to remit your salary funds legally outside China.

1) valid work permit

2) valid work visa

3) contract for the work periods being remitted

4) salary statement from your company for the period being remitted

5) tax statements for the period and amounts being remitted

note that the bank will verify all this data before you will be allowed to process a transfer to a foreign bank or currency.

if you are earning money on side gigs teaching without contracts, use it for your life expenses and travel, you will only be allowed to transfer what you earned less taxes outside China.

They can and will catch you if you are in China long enough.

good luck, this is the one thing I’m glad to be completely done with.
