Hello all,
I’m Julie and new to the group.
I’m moving to Cambodia (Siem Reap) in February and I will be looking for work as an English teacher once I have settled in.
My question is in relation to opening a bank account. Please can anyone advise if I can open an account with an initial deposit in GBP?
Any advce would be very much appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.
@juliehutchinson066
The used currencies in Cambodia are KHR and USD. GBP is not accepted.
So why would you deposit GBP in your savings account that is either KHR or USD, or both?
Cheers
Joe
You can use your home bank account to draw cash at any ATM. If you open an account at ABA in Siem Reap you can deposit cash at a number of their machines if that's what you want. It will be cheaper than the cost of bank transfers.
@juliehutchinson066
Hi
To open a bank account, you will need a 6 month or 12 month visa, passport, an address hotel rental agreement, dollors, you will need to look on the internet all banks have different rules for accounts, and different amounts to open an account, and a bank where you are,
As for working you will have to have a work permit,
Do you have a good knowledge of Cambodia ?.
Cheers
@Julien

Hi,
Thank you for the information.
I’m new to all this and just wanting to know how it all works.
I appreciate you getting back to me 😊
@toni345th
Hi Toni,
Thats very useful, thank you!
This will be my first time in Cambodia. I have done some research but theres nothing like speaking to people who are already there or have lived there previously.
I’m sure I’ll work it all out, just last minute jitters!
Thanks again
I am still in Australia for now but hopefully within the next 2 or 3 months I will be moving to live in Siem Reap Cambodia!

Hello!
I'm Veronica! 👋
Nice to meet you all.
Me and my hubby is planning a visit in October /November. We hope to first stay for 2-3 months ( if that is possible for us Norwegians) so that we can check if we want to stay long term. We have never been to Asia at all.
I am 45 this year, and hubby 35. ( Too young for retirement visa, I know)
We are retired in Norway .. It's like a social welfare. Hopefully we can find somehow to stay in the beautiful country for long term in the near future.
I just wanted to say hi to you all!
Hope you all have wonderful days over at the land of wonders! See ya!

Hello,
I am from Canada.
I am back from a very memorable and ground-shaking 4 weeks trip from Hanoi to Bangkok, through Cambodia. As I am preparing to retire from the tech world, I found that Southeast Asia is a good place I would love to spend time in. I found this site, and will probably have questions after I browsed through what was already discussed. There seems to be a good vibe here.
My first trip was in discovery mode, staying 3-4 days at each spot. I now plan to have a 4-5 weeks remote work time at one location in Cambodia, without moving much. Probably around October. That will help me further see if an expat life is for me.
Nice to join you all!
You are going to miss the floods.

Hello everyone,
I am Koll, a citizen of Cambodia, and I am very new to this website. I joined here for 2 reasons:
- To get to know more people and have connections, and if I could offer support in some ways
- Looking for classified items i could purchase when expat left Cambodia.
Thank you. Let me know if things i could support.
Hi I am an Aussie 65 with a small black poodle and no local ties. I want to move to Cambodia, retire and have an adventure. I am a classic car guy, but that looks like a dead duck.

I am a 66 year young Male UK/NZ passport holder living in Phnom Pehn, near Olympic Market...I am living on the basic UK state pension, have been here 3 months and I am enjoying the quality of accomodation, the people and the warmth,
Hi, Siem Reap much nicer, and cheaper.
Enjoy!
and Battambang also nicer and cheaper and much better environment
Health care should be your priority
Hi all, I'm Renaud, FR/CA citizen, I've been to Cambodia several times and liked it so much I'm now willing to relocate there. I prefer city life so mostly considering Phnom Penh, Battambang, Siem Reap. I'm 60 but I need to find something to keep me busy there; like a small business or other.
I'd also like to find bandmates, as I used to write and play a lot of alternative rock but I also love funky stuff. Open to any and all suggestions/offers!
Aloha All ~
I will be visiting Siem Reap soon and exploring the possibility of getting a retirement visa. I am an acupuncturist and herbalist and bodyworker.
When I travel I seek out traditional medicine practitioners, usually herbalists, to make videos and document their practices and approaches. I will be seeking out traditional practitioners in SE Asia during my stay.
Any feedback or suggestions regarding socially acclimatizing are welcome.
Thanks,
David Bruce Leonard
A retirement visa you can not work, or seek any income, but can be 3 months 6 months or a year, good luck in Cambodia
@earthmedicine
Also bear in mind if you decide to get a retirement extension of stay in Siem Reap it will take longer to get the passport back. Last time it took me about 15 days since the passport is sent to Phnom Penh and there was a holiday between. If you start in Phnom Penh, you can get the extension done much faster. When I got back in 2022, it took 3 days. Just be sure you get the right visa when you enter that you can extend. If you want someone in Phnom Penh, a lot of people use Kim for their visa and extension needs. I can send you her whatsapp details if you send me a PM.
I would also plan on traveling around Cambodia. You might enjoy Battambang and Kampot quite a bit. I live in Siem Reap and love it here. The city for me has the perfect blend of culture, history, food, coffee, and the occasional beer out. I like to walk where I go and the city has done a lot of work in the last years on developing biking and walking lanes. Apartments are pretty easy to find here. Since my partner is Khmer, she does that work for us. She also does all the shopping for us.
Take care and enjoy being here.
Heyy all, my name Yanna, Im newbie here
