Cost of Living

Retornado

Hello expats and locals alike ,
This is a controversial question because i respect there’s almost  no “right” answer - but if anyone is happy to share their experience on Mauritian cost of living I would be very interested ?
I realize everyone is different , and every month is different , but I’d still be interested in hearing your experience with :
- food
- bills
- transport
- getting out and being social ?

As mentioned previously on this forum, if you come from Europe then most things are cheaper in Mauritius, but if you come from South Africa, for instance, you might save a few thousand Rupees a month on Rent, but are going to pay more for food and alcohol; Petrol costs roughly the same but you are going to pay Double for a new or used car with the 100% import duty on vehicles.

The good advice has been given here that if you plan to eat in Restaurants every day or a few times a week, or buy the most expensive imported food and ingredients from the supermarket (and there are world-class examples of these on the island like Super U Tamarin and InterMart la Croisette), then you are definitely goong to have a challenge to live within you monthly budget.

If however you put in some effort to embrace the island lifestyle and learn about cooking some local dishes a few times a week with fresh ingredients from the daily market or road-side stalls, and at lunchtime you buy yourself dholl puri, mine frite or boulettes from a roadside vendor instead of a burger from McD or chicken from KFC,  then it will be easy to stay within budget.

The other costs that can add up in Mauritius, are private schooling, private healthcare and insurance.
