We just got DSTV and it costs roughly the same as in SA. I cant remember off hand. We got the HD package though, so it is the most expensive.

My husband wants to know if you're on PAL or NTSC? In other word will our english tv's work over there?

Your English televisions will work in Mauritius so be sure to bring them.  If you are thinking about getting a new tv, you would be better off getting it in the UK before moving as you will have a better selection and more than likely better prices in the UK.  You can also be able to claim back the VAT from Inland Revenue as well.

The DSTV "box" if I remember correctly costs 4,000 rupees for the standard, no frills box while the HD box that also allows you to record programs costs about 17,000 rupees.  Both prices include the dish and installation as well.

The cost of a monthly subscription for the full package for DSTV (with HD channels) is about 2,500 rupees per month.  The full package with all available channels with no HD is about 2,200 or 2,300 rupees per month.  If you do not need all the sports channels or specialty channels, etc it can be a lot less so it will depend on your personal preference and the channels you want.

DSTV does not provide any "local" programming though if you put up an aerial you can get local Mauritius channels, but they will be mostly in French.  The electricity company charges you 100 rupees per month as a "TV tax" for the local programming.  I'm not sure if you can get out of paying it if you do not have an aerial and receive local programming.

A friend of mine is a sales rep at DSTV.  I'll send you his contact details in a private message.  You can call him directly if you want specifics with regards to the packages and associated costs or have any other questions.

Hi Donna,

I hope you got the e-mail I sent for DSTV packages. This is the best cable channel for English speaking expats. The have excellent radio music as well as Christian service channels as most of the churches in Mauritius have services in French.

Hi Bunkoma & Terence,

Thanks again for such prompt replies, your stars!
