Opening a restaurant

John Cleaner

Hello there,

A friend and I  are planning to open a 36 seater restaurant in Curepipe.

Does anyone know which permits are required and from which authority to get them ?

From where can I recruit staff ?

Thank you.

Hello John,

I suggest that you reach out to the Municipality of Curepipe. They will help you out.

For staff recruitment, you can use the regular jobs boards or Facebook. Some of them are listed in the Work in Mauritius article.

@John Cleaner Best to keep it simple - you can get a BRN (business registration number) in a day. You will also need a TAN (tax account number). If you put yourself as self employed, it is easier. There are recruiting places for staff, but cheaper  easier to get some locals.

How can you be self-employed and have staff?

Would be interesting to know.

@External You just get a BRN & TAN - not sure what you mean as to how? Its a lot simpler & what most small to medium businesses do.

It was my belief and understanding  that as an expat ( aka a foreigner) one can't get an OP as a self-employed and also has a staff. If John is a dual citizen - as a Mauritian he can do whatever he wants

Once you have residence permit & work permit you can open business. There are some rules around staff but it is doable. Check/google MCCI & MRA & CBRD. You can do most of the business things online.
