Hello and a question about laundry...

Hello,

I'll be working in Tripoli starting in March.聽 I'll be travelling extensively so I'm not sure how much time I'll actually spend in Tripoli...but I'm sure I will have enough time to experience the city.

Accommodations for me are being handled by my client and will be in a "5 star equivalent hotel"...which I'm sure will be adequate, and laundry service is included.聽 This is probably a silly question, but how are the dry cleaning/laundry services?聽 Will my wool trousers come back 4 inches shorter or a different color?聽 I'm inclined to think that a hotel would be able to handle typical western business wear, but one never knows.聽

Also, do most taxi drivers and shop keepers speak a little English or French?聽 I'm trying to learn a little Arabic, before I leave, but it's proving very difficult for me.聽 I speak some Spanish, but I'd imagine that hasn't been popular in North Africa since the 1600s.

Dry cleaning - Yes, there are plenty of dry cleaners in the city. My wife uses a place at the top end of Gargaresh, they do a good job (ironing sometimes needs redoing on "troublesome" shirts) but they've never screwed up or lost anything.

Language - Most of the younger generation (<30) who have some education speak English (albeit of sorts sometimes). You can usually make yourself understood without having Arabic. The taxi drivers are hit and miss, some do and most don't. Just make sure you agree the fare before setting off, some of them will blantantly rip you off otherwise, but that's taxi drivers anywhere...

I agree with Sandman on this. I am just about to move out of my hotel after 5 weeks of being there, and my laundry has been done very well everytime. Taxi drivers, now don't get me started First 2 trips I made from Dahra to Janzour I was charged 15 LYD in each direction, only later to find out I should only have paid 5 I would say that less than 50 % speak much english (the taxi drivers), but you don't want them talking to you anyway, just let them concentrate on the road
