Moving to Accra

le_clairon

Hi!
my name is Claire and I'm moving to Accra in August. I've lived in Congo, UK, France, Netherlands, USA...  I'll be working for an international organisation in East Legon. I am currently trying to figure out which neighbourhood to live in... I don't think I want the hassle of a house (unless I find people to share with) and don't want to commute too long (still figuring out whether I want a car or a scooter)...
Any advice welcome, and happy to meet new people once I get to Accra.
Thanks!!

East Legon is a nice area and I am sure you can find somewhere to live there so that you don't have to commute.
Good Luck with your move.

East legon is one of the best areas in accra so it would be better if you live there as the moderator first suggested, Akwaaba

Hi Le Clairon! My advice is to be cautious with agents. Some of them are very good, but many of them will just plain rip you off or at the very least waste a lot of your time. Try and find someone who you trust and can recommend an agent or maybe place a classified for what you're after on Accraexpat or expat-blog. That way you can filter out many of the time wasters and fraudsters. Many agents will try and come over as just friendly Ghanaians trying to help. These are usually the people who quickly give you a phone number or email address to contact them with. They will try very hard to make you think of them as a friend, but unlikley to have the patience to resist asking you for money within the first few calls or emails. They will often claim to have spent a lot of time in Europe and that this experience somehow makes them more honest and understanding than others. There are many such people lurking on these message boards. They often reveal very little about themselves and will just try and pressure you to come and meet them at their 'office'. Once you get there they will talk a lot, listen very little, lead you on a wild goose chase all over Accra and offer you something that is very very expensive, tell you that what you're actually looking for is impossible to find or if they find something that you like tell you that someone else is going to take it today unless you take it right now and hand over lots of cash. My advice is get here, book in to a hotel and take your time. This will give you the chance to meet nice genuine Ghanaians and get a feel for the place. Ghanaians are fantastic people and generally very friendly. Don't let pushy, dishonest agents put you off!

I agree with all that. I hope you are now settled in Ghana.
