Tourists and Gambians are scrambling to leave the west African country after the Senegalese army said its forces would cross the border at midnight if long-time president Yahya Jammeh did not stand down.

Amid scenes of chaos at Banjul airport where British holidaymakers were being evacuated, Col Abdou Ndiaye, a spokesman for the Senegalese army, said troops were already at the Gambian border and would enter the country if the deadline for a transfer of power passed.

鈥淲e are ready and are awaiting the deadline at midnight. If no political solution is found, we will step in,鈥� Ndiaye told Reuters.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office advise against all but essential travel to The Gambia due to ongoing political uncertainty and potential military intervention following the Presidential elections on 1 December 2016. If you鈥檙e currently in The Gambia you should leave by commercial means if you have no essential need to remain. Contact your airline or travel company for more information about departure options.

The incumbent President, Yahya Jammeh, continues to contest the election results at the Supreme Court, while the President elect, Mr. Adama Barrow, has left the country. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has stated it may intervene, including possible military action, if President Jammeh doesn鈥檛 step down on the scheduled handover date of 18/19 January 2017.

Hi, I am writing this from the UK,聽 I was booked on a flight to come to the Gambia on the 29th January for 1 month but unfortunatley it wasnt to be,
I was so looking forward to seeing my friends Gambian and English again but today I decided to be on the safe side and cancelled my booking with Thomas Cook, so sad day today for me,
I hope all the troubles will very soon be over and I can come back to the Gambia very soon,
My thoughts and prayers go out to all my friends in the Gambia and hope you will all be safe, and soon be able to return to your homes.聽聽Shaz xx
