Sense of humour in Egypt

Bhavna

Hello everyone,

Should we set out to explore EgyptianÂ’s culture through its sense of humour? Indeed, if one is planning to settle in the country, it is best to understand the cultural codes governing humour in order to avoid any faux-pas.

What is special about the sense of humour in Egypt?

Is it acceptable to joke about any situations?

What is typically funny and what is absolutely not funny?

Are there any popular comedians in Egypt and how would one be able to discover them (stand-up shows, festivals, internet, etc.)?

What is the funniest joke you have heard in Egypt?

Please share your experience,

Bhavna

Some of the funny things in Egypt are really not many. However, If you don't laugh at things you would cry all day. The sad things in Egypt are many and begin with bureaucracy in this country. I think it is not FUNNY when people try to steal or be dishonest to a customer. I was at Egypt Gourmet the other day I purchased half a watermelon because another lady asked me to buy half. I said yes. The store charged me 36 Egyptian pound's for half a watermelon when vendors were selling WHOLE watermelons for 20 Egyptian pounds. That is dishonest, that store makes lots of money and inflates prices like crazy but they still STEAL if the opportunity presents itself. SAD

Children begging in the street instead of being in school. Government needs to insist all kids will be educated and not beg in the streets. Thrwow the parents in jail that will stop the begging.

Traffic, bad roads and bridges. FIX IT. ENOUGH. Instead of building a new city FIX THE OLD ONE that has served you for thousands of years.

The saddest thing I notice is that the GREAT MAJORITY of people and young students want to know HOW TO GET OUT OF EGYPT!! Most people hate their country and want to immigrate and get out of this way of life that does not show a light at the end of the tunnel. Salary LOW, Gas, Electric, Food too high for many. They just do not get along in life, they just eat and sleep.

Many people are just LAZY and others due to no incentive just don't do anything. I see young men sitting at coffee houses, NO WORK for hours doing nothing. SAD.

There is no good medicine in this country. Only the very wealthy live a good life and can travel to the Resorts in the North and enjoy life and good shopping in this city. People that are retired here like me are being challenged with the decrease in the US Dollar value...SAD

I hope I have shed some light on this SAD subject.

Not many people like to be funny. Often all of them are serious and would talk to you as required. As an expat they are very curious to know about your country and culture, however, we sometimes as a lot that should be restricted. We should respect their culture and tradition as well as speak up only when the opposite person is comfortable.

I have been to Egypt many times, and know many people, they are very friendly and will always welcome you. As the country is becoming more liberal, it is developing at the pace to reach in the league of other developing nations. Let is be sports, films, arts, etc., Egyptian are involved in every aspect of the economy.

I lived in Egypt from 2009 to 2013 and worked in Egyptian company.
People are normally funny like in Italy, since you are respectful and don' troll them. Quiet normal I would say.

In my experience,Egyptians are generally good-natured and have a great sense of humour. Yet,there is always a degree of intimacy connected with humour so any you may or may not experience all depends on the nature of the relationship. To explain a bit more, personally speaking  if I'm not on a certain level of comfort with you, (or your character is an untrustworthy or/unpleasant one but I have to associate with you) I'm going to be polite and decent but that's it.  Being engaging and open  then this something saved for people who's character and behaviour i'm comfortable with.

However, the comedy I have seen on Egyptian television/internet is something I find ridiculously funny.  Quite simply because it seems so completely crazy, not slap-stick but distinctly deranged. To give a better understanding of this, i'll juxtaposition it against say Turkish TV humour which I find clever, quirky and bizarre. Or maybe a better example is British humour which is more sarcastic and dry.  Egyptian humour is just all out crazy, which catches me off guard and guess I enjoy that.
