On the 31st of May 2006, the Montenegrin independence referendum commission confirmed that more than half of the Montenegrin voters have asked for independence from the Union of Serbia and Montenegro. Thus, shortly after, Serbia adopted a new constitution and became a stand-alone sovereign republic.
