About Sint Maarten

Updated byAnne-Lise Mty

Sint Maarten is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. It is located in the southern part of the French island of Saint Martin, which is a separate country and jurisdiction.

From January to May Sint Maarten goes through the dry season, and temperatures are about 29°C. From June to December the weather is warm and humid, and temperatures don't change dramatically; they are about 31°C. From July to November Sint Maarten is prone to hurricanes.

This Caribbean country offers all one would expect from an island. The sandy white beaches are perfect for lazy afternoons, or for the most active, surfing and diving are among the most common water sports. Sint Maarten has one of the largest zoological parks in the Caribbean, ideal for exotic bird-watching.

The casinos of Sint Maarten are one of the main highlights of nightlife here, with 14 different casinos to choose from with each having a unique theme. Tourism is by far the biggest industry in Sint Maarten, with about four-fifths of the population employed in this sector. The country is particularly popular for day-trips from cruise ships.
