About Guadeloupe

Updated byAnne-Lise Mty

Guadeloupe, a French overseas territory, is a group of five islands (two large and three small) in the Southern Caribbean, which was known as 鈥渒arukera鈥 meaning 鈥渢he island of beautiful waters鈥.

Guadeloupe is bearing a charming mix of the Caribbean and Creole culture. However, expats who don't speak a word of French will experience difficulties even to get by, as knowledge of English is very limited among the population. Another challenge for expats might be the transportation system, which is unreliable. Thus, for long-term residents and expats with families, renting a car might be the most convenient option. Guadeloupe's local currency is the euro, and there are many ATMs around, but card payments are also common.

The weather in Guadeloupe is hot and humid all year round between 20掳C and 30掳C, and the nature in the islands varies ' Basse Terre is covered in tropical vegetation and has a volcanic mountain, whereas Grande Terre is mostly known for its beautiful, sandy beaches. Expats in Guadeloupe should expect quiet days, luscious landscapes, and tranquil waters.

Tourism in Guadeloupe accounts for 80% of the GDP, and expats who are considering to look for employment in this sector should have a good level of French. However, Guadeloupe remains a heavily agricultural country too ' bananas, eggplant, noni, sapotilla, paroka, pikinga, giraumon squash, yam, gourd, plantain, christophine, prunecaf茅, cocoa, jackfruit, pomegranate are only some of the crops which grow in Guadeloupe.
