About Djibouti

Updated byAnne-Lise Mty

Located at the intersection of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, Djibouti is a small but powerful Eastern African country. Its location at the joint of these two seas means it’s a key stop on shipping routes. It also serves as an important military station, and thousands of American soldiers are based here.

The climate of Djibouti is desert, the land is mostly barren, and droughts are not uncommon. Temperatures are hot and averaging around 30°C year-round. July is the hottest month, and temperatures can reach up to 44°C.

The stunning landscape of Djibouti offers an array of possibilities ' from trekking through the desert plains and on mountaintops to scuba diving and bird-watching at the lakeside. If you prefer your nature encounters at a distance, there's a renowned tropical aquarium in the capital city, also called Djibouti.

The economy of Djibouti is primarily based on its key position on international sea routes, and most of the industry is evolving around service activities at the port. There is a high unemployment rate, and the country heavily relies on international aid, making it an interesting destination for expats who are working in the development sector.
