Belgian Birth Certificate after Citizenship

Ahmed_Talaat

I wanted through this post to share something with new Belgian citizens that I discovered lately.

Maybe someone could know about this, but I think there are people that still don't know about it.

After acquiring the Belgian citizenship, I went to my local city hall to make changes to my first name, but I discovered that despite we add the foreign birth certificate in the nationality file, they don't register it, so if you acquired the citizenship and you wanted to get a Belgian birth certificate, you'll be surprised that you don't have one!

What people should do after acquiring the Belgian citizenship is to go to the "Birth Service" in your city hall and register your foreign birth certificate. then the operator will give you an attest of the Belgian birth certificate after registering the foreign one!

After that, in Flanders for example, you can easily request online either "Uittreksel", "Afschrift", or "Internationale geboorteakte" depending on your needs.

I discovered that this process is not done automatically!

What is the benefit? Let's say you require a Birth Certificate for any reason, instead of getting it from your home country and apostille it, you can get it quickly from the city hall or online from "Mijn Burgerprofiel" or the corresponding "My Profile" website in your region.

At the end, I hope that I gave a useful info.!

@Ahmed_Talaat, Thanks for sharing the information.

Can we register the birth certificate with the same certificate we submitted for Nationality or do we need to get a new one, apostille and translate?

@Ahmed_Talaat

This was not the case for me. Maybe it's something specific to your municipality or simply an oversight by the people in the municipality.

@RKE09

Yes, you can register with the same Birth certificate that you applied with in the nationality file

Or maybe it was something specific in your city hall!

Anyway, the whole idea is to make sure that if this registration was not done automatically then you need to do it!
