Hi..if you are planning to settle and set-up a business in the Philippines, I will encourage you to invest in the province where the competition is not so stiff. I sent you a message for business proposal. Take time to study and scrutinize your plans. GOD bless.

Thank you for your response! I will be on the Island of Panay! However, Im thinking more of an internet business that can be operated from anywhere! I have given thought to food stands, also.
Mostly, I would love to lay on the beach with a laptop and cell phone and make money from there! LOL WHO wouldnt?
I will continue to pursue an entrepreneurial expat experience!

I looked a bit into some opportunities and found that small food stands from hot dogs to dim sum to sisig to shawaramas run about 5-10k in startup costs all-inclusive (permits, fees, supplies, emergency fund).

Im not too sure on ROI though. Folks i've asked mentioned it all depends on location. Food stands by schools, busy areas, etc... I guess location is the magic word for everything.

I have a friend who started with that amount of capital but its more service oriented and not food stalls. I think it was a sleep tech reading business (for sleep apnea). I know a co-worker who quit her job and moved to the Philippines, she opened a publishing firm. I know that she didn't have a huge capital. The difference though is that my friends are not paying for cost of living expenses except their own food and travel expenses. They live with their parents house in Manila as the parents stayed in the US.

If you want to engage and expand your business go where the competition is! That what I gain my experience in Singapore and also as a Singaporean engaging some business in Philippine. All those business cost feasibility theory proposal is more on giving you a sense of " Euphoria". Where I come from I was brought up with with an multi racial environment like the Muslim, Indian, Chinese, Eurasian, American and many others as my neighbor and friend. My take is to learn the culture before venture into any business. And you can  take it to the bank.

I work online full time as an affiliate marketer and earn a decent income (not huge by N. American standards) but decent.... and it allows me to work from my computer while traveling...

I'm actually heading to Manila in January and will travel the Phils for a few months... If you are still there, let me know and we can grab a beer and see if I can help...

I would advise holding on to you 5K and use it to support yourself while you learn how to earn a living online... However, it's not easy and it takes time... just have to be realistic.

Ciao for now,

Johnny
