BACK TO THE BASICS - A WEBSITE BY EXPATS, FOR EXPATS

flipfinger

Personally, I liked having a site where I could come and get useful information from people in the same situation as me.  It stopped being a useful site for me when all I was reading were posts about how everything is so great and that the expats should either shut up or leave.  Hopefully things will improve and i'll actually want to hang out here again!

We're cool!

You can kinda guess after first couple of posts;)

1. The generally poor standard of English

2. Their rose-tinted opinion that Libya is a perfect society

3. They frequently respond along the lines of "go back home" when they read something that a real expat has posted that they don't agree with

4. They send threatening, abusive or intimidating PM's

5. They may have "Libya" somewhere in their username

Or possibly that, thinking no-one will notice, they put what they think is an amusing name... wait for it... BACKWARDS.

See above...

Ahh.. glad the mods found him.

I love this forum. You guys are cool! I moved from Tripoli recently (after living there only for 6 months) to Singapore and I found that Tripoli has the best expat forum, informative, responsive, lively and also entertaining, compare to any onther country in this world. This forum is the only good thing I had  living in Tripoli, and honestly, being a a full time mother and work at home full time online remotely from my home country, it's one of the website I just had to check out everyday next to my personal email account (it's almost like my daily newspaper). Thank you so much for all your contributions, I wish Singapore would have such a lively forum as Libya. Insyaallah;-))

Guess I will walk the fence on this one except to offer just a few comments:
1. As Julien said, this is a temporary situation.  Instead of complaining about it, come up with an alternative. I have only read one suggested alternative.
2. I am still able to recieve PMs from locals.  This means that the locals can still read the forum and respond directly to the author of a post.  This cuts down on the inclination to "show off" in front of others because no one will read it except perhaps the author of the comment. If the local response is a helpful one, it can be pasted into the actual forum.
3.  I am against this measure becoming permanent for the following reason: Many places in Libya do not have the critical mass of expats that Tripoli does.  If a person were to ask a question about lets say Derna, who else but a local would be able to respond?

That's my 3 cents worth.

Cheers

Long time no post...
Still a nice amusement...

I think it will be very prejudice to block the locals from participating, and  as a libyan citizen  I felt angry to read this and by the way even if you want, you cannot, unless you have the magic wand , to know which is which , luckily you do not,  no way to know the identities of bloggers, poor juilen ,  or else do u have some kind of ulterior agenda to use this blog for . unfortunately  for you, do not try to block my account I STILL be able to  log in with different ID , from different computer even from  a different country ,MOUSE AND CAT GAME, by the way why are you that suspicious,  POOR JUILEN

Wow, I really admire your dedication to the cause of free speech, if you're willing to travel to other countries in order to evade detection. You sir, are a true cyber jedi and we can all learn from your example. I truly look forwards to your contributions to this site, as I'm sure you'll be able to provide much valuable local information to expats. I, for one, cannot wait for your 3rd post, should it be even half as enlightening as your first two.
Soldier on, my brave internet warrior, I salute you.
